1. What did you see as the aim(s) of the lesson?
We set out to teach the class the value of a newspapers' front page and the reputation of their brand.
2. What did you plan to do?
We wanted to combine discussion with activity, and thus after an open talk and comparison of different newspapers we put people into groups to create their own newspaper and front page, using the same story for each group but with a different image for each as well. Through discussion and simple activity we could have everyone focus on the values of this industry from different perspectives.
3. What went well?
People took to the task eagerly and had a lot of fun. There was laughter and some fun products to discuss by the end. In the previous discussion we also had a lot of positive involvement from most of the class.
4. What didn't go so well and how would you do it differently?
I feel as they we may have not taught much, as everyone seemed to already have an understanding of this medium. This my prove different with an actual classroom of younger people.
Furthermore, although a large number of people volunteered to add to the open discussion, it was often the same people. We could have called upon a quieter classmate or two to voice their opinion.
5. What do you think people learned from the session?
I think this lesson served more as a reminder for a lot of people. Although given the chance to hear others opinions did prompt debate and provoke new thoughts. After a brief refresher in how a newspaper sells itself, I think the class is more attuned to the medium now.
