Warda's Foley Lesson Reflection

1. What did you see as the aim(s) of the lesson? The aim of the lesson was to create Foley and cut it to picture to demonstrate the significance of sound in film.

 2. What did you plan to do? Shanthi and I planned to begin the lesson with an introduction to the art of Foley. We played three short clips of rainfall and asked the class to vote on which video had authentic recordings of rainfall and which one had a foley of sizzling bacon. This helped introduce the topic of Foley and it’s uses while also showing the power of cutting sound to picture. After the introduction we planned to played a video clip explaining Foley in the film industry to further explain it’s use in real time and the hard work and creativity needed to produce authentic sounding foley. We then planned to follow this with an introduction to the task.

 The task was to include:
 1. Showing a clip from Fight Club
 2. Explaining the different props available to create foley
3. Demonstrating audio editing on Premier
 4. Tutorial on how to use the mic recorders

 3. What went well? I liked that the class was very enthusiastic and engaged throughout the lesson. The practical element of the lesson allowed the class to explore their creativity. It also allowed them to appreciate the use of sound and realize it’s importance.

 4. What didn't go so well and how would you do it differently? The introduction could have been a bit longer and more engaging. The video explaining Foley was a bit lengthy and could have been cut down so as not to overwhelm the students with a lot of information at once. We could also managed the class better. Oftentimes the editing was being done by one or two individuals leaving others to do nothing. In the future, iI would ensure that they alternate in order to keep all students engaged and focused.

 5. What do you think people learned from the session? I think most students learnt an appreciation for sound in film and how important it is in creating a captivating, interesting movie. I think they also learnt different every day props and how it can create lifelike sounds suitable for movies.
