Foley Lesson Reflection-Shanthi
The aim of this session was introduce the art of Foley to the class. Warda and myself introduced the topic through 3 short clips depicting rainfall in which the class had to guess which clip was actually the sound of bacon frying. All three were actually bacon proving that everyday objects including food can be used to create different sounds. For example, we explained how snapping celery sticks could be used to create the sound of someones neck snapping. After this we showed the class a clip explaining what Foley is and how Foley Artists work on adding sound to movies.
We then divided the group into two and presented them with the task of adding foley to a movie clip which had no sound. Each group was given a zoom recorder to record the needed sounds using things they could find in the building. They then had the task of imputing the sound into the clip using Adobe Premier.
I think the introduction to the topic with the use of video material was good. The classes attention was instantly draw to finding out more on foley and how it is created. Both groups were able to creatively create and record sounds for their movie clip. One group had time to add dialogue which we provided too which was great fun to watch. From the class feedback we recieved, everyone said that they had a lot of fun despite facing some challenges such as time restraints. The task not only enabled them to see what foley making was like but it also brought out a lot of creativity amongst those in the group.
If we were to do the lesson again I would give them a shorter clip as some said the clip was too long to give their best in that time frame. I also felt that my execution of the instructions could have been clearer.
From carrying out the main task I think the class have learnt what Foley is and how it is created. They have come to understand the impact sound has on film production and the difference between Foley and Sound Effects.
