Practical Semiotics activity...

One of my favourite starter tasks for any age! Construct ten photos and come back and discuss them. Can we work out which fits each category and how do we know? Where would we go next with this material? maybe some comparison with real examples of each genre? maybe a piece of writing for students? Dropping in some terms from Bathes and Saussure? Hopefully it was good fun...the results seem to suggest it was!

Remember. you can always change some of the categories for particular classes- maybe a still from a Tarantino film instead.

Practical Semiotics Task

In your group, you are to set up and take TEN pictures. Don’t go too far away and don’t annoy anybody!

As far as possible, you should use the same model(s) in each image. The images are to be uploaded to our instagram. NB Don’t name the category!

Everyone should be back here to view and discuss all the images in 40 minutes time.

1.     A still for the front cover of a college prospectus
2.     The cover image for the first album by a new artist
3.     A holiday snapshot
4.     A facebook profile picture
5.     A shot from an actor’s portfolio
6.     A still from a Hitchcock film
7.     An advert for a chocolate bar
8.     An image to illustrate a news story about a protest
9.     A cover image for either a women’s or men’s magazine
10. Invent one category of your own, different from the above

Good luck!

Full results from this group and previous are on the instagram account here:
